How you progress depends on how you want to play and what you want to do. Perception is also pretty useful, and Luck can give you some great unexpected boons, but it's not essential. If you want to do best in the game, you'll need to study the perk chart regularly, always planning your next move.īuff your Strength, Charisma and Intelligence skills to start with, as this will give you an introductory boost in the areas of physical capability, conversation skills, and levelling. There are a ton of perks in Fallout 4, from passive improvements to active effects that can completely change your playstyle. Keep close eyes on your resources and junk materials, and don't forget that you can always go into craft mode and scrap most things in the world - crumbling houses, trees, cars and all furniture - to make better use of their individual components. Of course, setting up bastions of hope in such a desolate place attracts the unwanted attention of raiders, so you'll need to set up defences, too. Settlement building is a great way to put you in control of rebuilding the once-great Commonwealth, from constructing your own personal house to creating shelters for your settlers, crops and water supplies, right down to crafting furniture, and setting supply routes so that traders can come and sell you wares. Your character's pre-war hometown, Sanctuary Hills, is your first stop once you exit the vault, and it forms the central hub of your operations. You can mod your power armor at racksįallout 4 puts you in charge of settlements you can then manage, expand and customise to your liking. You should therefore be conservative, but always be aware you've got the extra firepower capabilities available when you need them - power armour can turn the tide when trying to take down a particularly mean Deathclaw. It's also the only piece of armour you can equip that takes damage and requires repairs, and the maintenance takes up valuable resources. These are fairly commonly found on your adventures, but they're definitively finite.Įquipping your power armour, and any action you perform while suited up - walking, jumping, sprinting - depletes the fusion core inside. Like pretty much everything in the game, you can customise it to your tastes, swapping out individual parts, adding paint jobs, jetpack boosters and unique capabilities, but it requires fusion cores to run. Instead, you get your power suit pretty early on as part of the quest line, and it's designed more like a power-up than a suit of armour you can have equipped at all times. Unlike in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, power armour in Fallout 4 isn't a late-game discovery. Power armour needs to be used economically Remember: when you dismiss a companion to a settlement, they walk there - they don't fast travel! 5. If this should become an issue for you, just wait or sleep for 24-hours and you should find your companions hanging around. For ease, I used Sanctuary Hills as my main hub of operations - in fact this is smart advice in general it's much easier to keep track of all your gear, companions and components if you store it in a central location - but still came into trouble a couple of times. Keep close track of them, and when you dismiss them from your service to go back to one of your settlements, try to remember where you sent them. You can talk to them, find out about their history, and even unlock unique companion quests when you reach certain affinities with them.īut it can be quite difficult to keep a track of where they are, as the game doesn't have a companion screen to see exactly where they're at. The most obvious is your faithful canine, Dogmeat, who's great for searching abandoned buildings for good treasure, and robot butler Codsworth is not only hilarious but pretty decent in battle and really rather durable. There are several companions in Fallout 4, all with different skills, strengths and weaknesses to use.

Meanwhile, engineer Diaz deals with more of the nuts-and-bolts problems aboard the ship, as well as navigating a romance with a fellow officer.Īs in a good peak-era Star Trek episode, the “problem of the week” is tackled from more than one angle, with some of the crew handling a social or interpersonal conflict while others investigate some related scientific or technological puzzle. Over the course of the story, Rydek takes point on unraveling a mystery with galactic implications, earning the trust of the crew while also evaluating whether or not Solano is worthy of her own. Solano fears that he’s lost the confidence of his staff, and is counting on Academy protege Rydek to help restore his honor as the Resolute embarks on an important diplomatic mission. The Resolute is recovering from a recent disaster that cost the lives of several of its crew and the reputation of its captain, Zachary Solano. Resurgence alternates between the perspectives of two player-controlled characters aboard the science vessel Resolute, incoming first officer Commander Jara Rydek (Krizia Bajos) and enlisted engineer Petty Officer Carter Diaz (Josh Keaton). But as a Star Trek story, it definitely earns its pips. As a game and as a piece of software, it leaves a lot to be desired. Set aboard a new ship and starring an almost entirely new cast, Resurgence is a branching narrative whose balance between interstellar intrigue, interpersonal conflict, and explosive space action hews closer to that of its source material than any Star Trek game in decades - maybe ever. This seems to be the aim of Star Trek Resurgence, the debut release from Telltale offshoot Dramatic Labs, and the first Star Trek game in ages to be as character- and dialogue-focused as the television series. To truly capture the essence of the spacefaring adventure series, a video game should be as much about talking as it is about flying and shooting, allowing players to explore new worlds, build relationships, and confront complicated moral dilemmas. Gene Roddenberry’s cosmic polemic often contains action, but it’s never about action Star Trek is about compassion, curiosity, and camaraderie. Moreover, even the most celebrated Star Trek games, such as 2000’s Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force, 2002’s Star Trek: Bridge Commander, and the long-running MMORPG Star Trek Online, place an overwhelming emphasis on combat, which is only ever a last resort in Star Trek stories. There are licensed Star Trek video games going back 50 years, but there’s never been a truly great Star Trek game, one whose appeal outstretches the limits of its existing fan base. Unlike its esteemed counterpart from Lucasfilm, Star Trek’s history with video games isn’t exactly stellar. Numerous Indigenous leaders have indicated their support for Downie’s comments. we’re going to get it fixed and we got the guy to do it, to start, to help.” It’s maybe worse than it’s ever been, so it’s not on the improve. Trained our entire lives to hear not a word of what’s going on up there. That we were trained our entire lives to ignore. During the concert, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau watching from the audience, Downie said, “ cares about the people way up North. Preliminary audience figures tell us that about 11.7 million people watched the concert on Saturday night. For more on the Tragically Hip, you can check out their website here. The CBC will broadcast and stream the Tragically Hip’s concert tomorrow (Saturday) starting at 8:30 pm ET. Downie has spoken against capital punishment when introducing this song. That song is about David Milgaard, who was wrongfully convicted of murder as a 17 year old in Saskatoon and imprisoned for 23 years before DNA evidence conclusively proved his innocence. …It’s about the Montreal Massacre in 1989, when a misogynistic killer who hated feminists, walked into Ecole Polytechnique and murdered 14 women, shooting and injuring 13 others.” …One of the Hip’s unreleased songs is a beloved bootleg called ‘Montreal’. That’s so important and seemingly simple: women get to be people, not just a prop of male fantasy or wish fulfilment. She writes: “For the most part, Downie’s lyrics afford women agency. In many ways, the environment is also the underdog - so, it’s an easy fit.”Īndrea Warner notes Downie’s feminism. That experience, combined with my rock and roll roots gives me something of an affinity for the underdog. As a musician, I travel widely around the country and talk to a lot of people, from all walks of life. Downie told the audience, “First Nations…that’s Canada’s capital”.Įxplaining how he became engaged in environmental issues, Downie has said: “I grew up on the lake and spent most of that time outdoors. Waubgeshig Rice (a CBC Ottawa reporter from Wasauksing First Nation) tweeted Downie’s comment last night about being in the “nation’s capital” for this concert. Author Joseph Boyden writes: “As my dear friend Gord Downie said when he and the rest of the Tragically Hip came to James Bay to perform their first high school gym show in 25 years, our nation is only as good as how we treat our most vulnerable, as how we respond to those most in pain.”ĭownie has also stated: “I stand in support of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nations and all Canadians who find themselves with no voice in our present version of democracy, who are trying to come up with the entry fee that gets them a seat at the table where their pollution future is being discussed.” That we know what’s best for the world.'”ĭownie has visited Attawapiskat First Nation a number of times. Writer Chris Koentges has noted: “Hectored by a CBC host in an interview in 2009, said: ‘I would want no part of propagating or galvanizing or burnishing some of the stupid mythology in this country. It’s not surprising then that Downie was also one of the “initiating signatories” of the Leap Manifesto. It’s hard sometimes to use the capital you have as a beloved rock band and put it to various causes, especially when they’re a bit more controversial, like energy issues.”Īt the “Rock the Line” concert in October 2013, Downie described the 300,000 barrel per day Line 9 tar sands pipeline as a “pollution delivery system”. They came to the Line 9 show I put on a few years ago. They’re really great leaders on that front. They don’t wait to see what someone else will do. They’ve done a lot of generous fundraising and they get the word out for various Kingston community initiatives for kids camps or health care stuff. Musician and activist Sarah Harmer has commented: “I really admire character as citizens. It was a memorable concert and additionally moving given the band’s singer and lyricist Gord Downie is courageously facing brain cancer.īelow is a brief summary about his politics (which includes water protection, health care, pipeline opposition, Indigenous solidarity, prisoner rights, and more). Why would a man in his 40s, whose main business was real-estate development, want to host a beauty contest for teenage girls? But his close involvement in the contest raises questions for the president. No such allegations have been levelled against Trump, who at the time was dating Marla Maples, the woman who in 1993 became his second wife. Photograph: Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images Top right and bottom: Trump with Casablancas, at Trump’s Plaza hotel in New York, venue for the 1991 Look of the Year awards. Photograph: Bettina Cirone/The LIFE Images Collection via Getty Images Top left: John Casablancas with Naomi Campbell, who co-presented the 1991 Look of the Year finale. Some of these allegations amount to sexual harassment, abuse or exploitation of teenage girls others are more accurately described as rape. The stories we have heard suggest that Casablancas, and some of the men in his orbit, used the contest to engage in sexual relationships with vulnerable young models. Over the last six months, the Guardian has spoken to several dozen former Look of the Year contestants, as well as industry insiders, and obtained 12 hours of previously unseen, behind-the-scenes footage. Three decades on, a very different picture of the competition is beginning to emerge. As Casablancas had warned them at the outset of the competition, in a scene recorded by TV cameras: “You are going to be judged, constantly judged.” (In 19, the Elite contest was filmed for a 60-minute glossy television special, featuring interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, and later screened on Fox – an early foray into reality TV.) Casablancas was a powerful figure in the industry, and to many of the new crop of would-be supermodels, this seemed an opportunity too good to miss. For them, the stakes were high, and the pressure to impress the judges great. Many were away from their families for the first time. Some had come to New York with parents or chaperones in tow others were alone. While Elite’s official brochure stated that contestants were aged between 14 and 24, all of those the Guardian has spoken to, competing in both years, were aged between 14 and 19. “This wasn’t being judged or part of the competition – it was for their entertainment.” “I knew in my gut it wasn’t right,” she recalls. She says an organiser told her that if she refused, she would be excluded from the competition. Photograph: Nina Berman/NOORĪnother contestant, who was 15 at the time, also remembers being asked to walk for Trump, Casablancas and other men on the boat in September 1992. I didn’t dance – I blew a kiss at them, spun around and walked away.”Ĭontestants wait to board the Spirit of New York yacht, September 1991. And she said, ‘No, you look great, take off your blazer and go and do it.’ So I walked down the stairs. “I said to her, ‘I don’t see why me going down the stairs and dancing in front of those two has anything to do with me becoming a model. “A woman at the agency was pushing me,” she recalls. Lee, an introverted teenager who loved to draw but hated school, was in New York for the first time. She recalls how the contestants were encouraged to parade downstairs, one by one, and dance for Trump, Casablancas and others. One of the girls on the boat was Shawna Lee, then a 14-year-old from a small town outside Toronto. On a similarly golden evening in early September that year, another group of contestants boarded the Spirit of New York, chartered for another Elite cruise. In 1992, Trump hosted the competition again. In 1991, he was a headline sponsor, throwing open the Plaza, his lavish, chateau-style hotel overlooking Central Park, transforming it into the main venue and accommodating the young models. Trump was closely involved in Casablancas’s competition. At stake was a life-changing prize: a $150,000 contract with the world’s then leading modelling agency, Elite Model Management, run by John Casablancas. They had travelled from around the world to compete in Elite’s Look of the Year competition, an annual event that had been running since 1983 and was already credited with launching the careers of Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen and Stephanie Seymour. The party aboard the Spirit of New York was one of several events that Donald Trump, then 45, attended with a group of 58 aspiring young models that September. |
